Getting Ahead Workshop

at New City Church

Tues & Thurs, 6-8pm January 23-March 21, 2024

This workshop provides a way for families to investigate the impact that poverty has had, providing a safe, agenda-free learning environment where adults can reflect on their lives, examine where they are at, assess their own strengths and resources, investigate new possibilities, make plans for their own future stories, offer ideas for building a prosperous community, and choose a team to help them fulfill their goals and dreams.

Getting Ahead is a 10-week workshop for families of students in APS Title-1 Schools or our community, who wish to improve their economic stability. Investigators can earn up to $25 in Grocery Gift Cards per Session, up to $400 for completing the workshop. Sessions also include a kids program and meals.

New City is a host site for the Getting Ahead Workshop in January 2024.

Location: 4700 San Mateo Blvd NE

Workshop dates: Tuesdays and Thursdays 6-8pm starting January 23 - March 21

Other Getting Ahead Workshops are taking place in ABQ. Find details here.

It takes a whole team of support for each workshop! We want to remove as many barriers for an adult who desires to be part of this workshop. This is also an opportunity to contribute to families’ success and getting ahead through relationships! Here are ways to get involved:

  • Hospitality - open the building and set up for the workshop

  • Meals - serve a meal to all investigators and children

  • Childcare - help provide a safe and fun childcare environment for kids while their parents are attending the workshop.

  • Kids Program - help lead a kids financial literacy course while parents are in their own class, kids will gain valuable knowlege! We will also offer homework help as needed.

Team Training

All Getting Ahead Team members and volunteers are asked to take the seminar "A Poverty Framework.” This will give invaluable tools and equip us all with the necessary perspectives to build relationships in our community. Team members will also need an APS background check.

This training is offered by Shine Network.

  • Poverty Framework: January 20th at New City Church, 830am-1230pm
